In the southern part of Nara Park, the beautiful Sagi-Ike Pond is hidden in a few meters behind by the grove path leading to the Kasuga Shrine. In the center of the pond there is Ukimido Pavilion ("floating hall"). Built in 1916 and renovated in 1994, this hexagonal wooden structure offers a beautiful picture from anywhere on the lake observing.
Besides its beauty, one of the positives of this place is that it is usually not very crowded by tourists. You can choose one of the stone benches around the pond or in the pavilion, conected to the pound's shore by a wooden walkway, to have a break.
It also gives photo enthusiasts the opportunity to have beautiful shots at any time of the year, either with sakura in spring, momiji in autumn, snow (hopefully) in winter, or completely green in summer. Also, the dim lights that illuminate it at night propitiate the practice of night photography.
A special moment to visit this pond is during the Man-Toro Festival, on August 13th and 14th, when thousands of lamps are lit throughout Nara Park.
In short, an ideal place to escape the crowds of other areas of the park, where to relax and get lost in your thoughts while watching the occasional passing deers.
