NARAMACHI NIGIWAI-NO-IE: LIVING IN THE PAST

Nigiwai Naramachi-no-ie is a traditional house in Naramachi right at the back of Gangoji Temple. Built in 1917, in the Taisho Period, the architects took into consideration some of the structural characteristics of the Edo period when it comes to seize the narrow width of the house. Thus, systems opening doors and windows, storage, etc., are focused to occupy the smallest space possible so that the rooms are spacious and airy as possible. Also, a garden runs through the side of the house providing a good light to all rooms. This garden also offers the opportunity to feel the seasons change depending on the state of flowers and leaves of the trees that grow in.
A particular feature of the house is the presence of a corridor, more typical of the Taisho era than the Edo architecture. The house offers all the clues to understand the daily life of the time it was built. This house is refocused for the visit as a house museum, so certain licenses are taken to show visitors more interesting elements. So the construction of two additional Tokonomas in addition to the usual one.
But the main function of this house was the commercial. The bottom thereof is preserved a "Kura" or warehouse to store the goods for sell.
The person in charge explains in great detail and great kindness all the features of the house. At the end of the visit you can freely take an Origami (handmade paper figure).
