As the name implies (City North), Kitamachi is north of central Nara, a few meters from Kintetsu Nara Station. While Naramachi is an area where get a sense of life in Japan since the Edo period, Kitamachi is much more recent and less touristy. It is thus an ideal place to immerse themselves in a quiet current Japanese residential area full of everyday charm, with its shops, its small shrines and temples area ...
The closest part to the Kintetsu Nara Station opens towards the north in two shopping streets full of charming restaurants and cafes. But once we deepen the neighborhood, shops disappear and we were contemplating the diversity of styles of Japanese houses. In this area there are some points promoted for tourism, as Nara Women's University, builded in a west arquitectural style; and the former police station, now converted into the Tourist Information Center of Kitamachi. On the eastern side, attached to Nara Park, you are the impressive gate Tegaimon. And very close, Kitamachi Tofu, the perfect place to enjoy a delicious soy milk with a soy donut. With discount for our guests!
Finally, another interesting area with some corners steeped in the past, is the point of crossing the Sahogawa river with Ichijoudori street, where there are some temples and shrines.
The return from Kitamachi to the hostel offers a nice walk along the Sahogawa, which we talk some other time.
