If you are in Nara before December 6, that is, until next Sunday, do not miss the exhibition of ukiyoe "The great world of ukiyoe" in the Nara Prefectural Museum of Art. Since the entrance to the museum is free for foreign tourists, there is no excuse to skip the visit.

For those who do not know, ukiyoe are Japanese paintings on paper that were made in Japan mainly in the nineteenth century. Not only strongly influenced European Impressionist painters (Van Gogh made versions of several of these paintings, some of which can be seen in the exhibition) but they are a clear precursor of manga and European comics. The invention of the printing press allowed to make many copies of each of the works, so the value of the the paintings decreased. Thus, they began to be used for wrapping objects and clothes were sent to Europe, and so was the way in which European painters discovered the existence of these paintings.

The paintings was about the everyday life of the period and the arts and artist, such as kabuki and the kabuki actors. Another of the fundamental subjects was the landscape, which is showed in this exhibition in one of its best examples: "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" by Utagawa Hiroshige.

Open hours from 9:00 to 17:00 (last admission at 16:30)
