Of the several ponds located in Nara Park, all of them worthy of a visit, Sarusawa-Ike Pound is the most popular due to its location at the end of Sanjo-dori, the main street of Nara.

Sarusawa-Ike and its environment confugures an iconic image of Nara, with Kofukuji temple's Pagoda peeked towards the pound from behind the trees. On the perimeter of the pond, wooden benches provide a great place to rest or have lunch or dinner while observing the birds that roam around the visitors. More elegant, herons are frequently perch on rocks and logs in the middle of the pond, sharing thouse with turtles.

This pond is the scenery of several festivals, such as the Mantoro or Uneme Festival, directly related with the pond.
